The correlations between sounds and brain activity are still not understood perfectly by scientists; however, it seems plausible that some particular kinds of sounds can improve our performance in specific cognitive tasks - as anyone can easily verify listening to particularly gifted artists and musicians.

For example, it is a relatively common experience among mathematicians to use Johann Sebastian Bach while working with very abstract concepts, while writers seem to prefer Wolfang Amadeus Mozart when engaging in creative tasks. There are several other artists, less popular than Bach and Mozart, that possess the distinctive ability to communicate directly with the deep mechanisms of our brain - see, for example, the medieval works by Hildegard Von Bingen.

In our time, the invention of eletronic music gave artists a brand new set of unprecedented technical possibilities: together with a renovated interest in a "numerical" approach to sound quality - such as Hans Kaiser's studies on ideas that can be traced back to Pythagoras -, and recent, surprising discoveries from psychoacoustics, the new tools enabled revolutionary and effective experimentation.

Symbolic Music is the result of Antonella Canonico's research in the field of "sound quality", continuing the intuitions and experiments of psychedelic and cosmic music (Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schultz, just to name the most representative artists in this tradition).

Symbolic Music, available for free in this website under a Creative Common License, contains the best and most effective tracks of Antonella Canonico's musical repertory, almost three hours of music expressly designed to aid abstraction and creativity.

Enjoy!
